We decided to visit this coffee shop after walking past it a few times, but were surprised to be met with a rather cold reception from the owner. As someone who genuinely enjoys exploring and supporting local eateries and cafés, this was quite unexpected. One of the things I’ve always loved most about Taipei’s cafe culture is its warmth, sense of community, and the hospitality that so often comes with it. Unfortunately, this visit felt like anything but that. The owner kept the interaction brief and distant, and it felt as though the only thing he cared to ask was “Have here or takeaway” even after I mentioned that it was our first time visiting, there didn’t seem to be much interest beyond that. We ultimately decided not to order as the takeaway discount policy was unclear. There appeared to be a NT$30 discount, but it wasn’t explained whether this applied per person or to the bill as a whole. When returning the menu, the owner initially asked me to wait for him. As I was standing there, I asked if I could pass it to the guests waiting behind us but was quickly told, “No need, just give it to me.” As he then immediately reached for the menu after asking me to wait in the first place, the exchange felt awkward and left me feeling as though I had done something wrong… I understand no one is obliged to be friendly or overly warm, but as a customer, I value kindness and approachability. The cafe’s name suggests that it’s all about the people and connection, however the experience made me feel otherwise. Regrettably, it’s not a place I would recommend, particularly to those who also appreciate friendlier and more welcoming service.

Easily my favorite café in Taipei. A tall order in a city with an amazing coffee scene but The Folks always makes me so happy. The coffee and the overall vibe always completes my Taipei visit. Meticulously prepared coffee, roasted and brewed by the owner himself. And don’t forget the epic musical selection! If you’re visiting, take note of everyone’s hushed tones and chill demeanor. This place is not for big groups but perfect for solo cafe chilling and for duos too.

This place is a hidden gem with a cozy vibe. It has limited seating, around 5-6 seats, so you can either sit inside or stand behind the café. I had a relaxing experience on a Sunday morning. I ordered a hot cappuccino and enjoyed it while people chatted around me. The cappuccino came in a small cup with a strong flavor. The music was occasionally lousy, but I didn’t mind at the time. I hope the owner can offer line pay next time.
