We were invited to a special dinner and were served 18 dishes- ALL were super delicious. Before we sat down, the tour describing- how dumplings are made was informative- the servers also showed us how to prepare sauses. It was a memorable experience- all dishes were flavorful- sautéed cucumber, tasty appetizer, chicken in rice wine, todu, dumplings with truffles, chicken, fish, shrimp, squash/shrimp, greens, crab, fried rice, and more- ending with more dumplings with sweet taro, then chocolate- even the oolong tea was tasty. Can’t pick a favorite
The original Din Tai Fung location is a historic landmark for food lovers, but it now serves mainly as a takeaway outlet after a much larger restaurant opened across the street to accommodate the overwhelming number of visitors. Even so, this remains one of the brand’s most popular locations, attracting large crowds of locals and tourists every day. It’s also a frequent stop for tour groups, so long queues are almost guaranteed. If you’re planning to dine here, it’s highly recommended to arrive early. I reached the restaurant at around 11:00 a.m. and was quoted a waiting time of nearly three hours. Fortunately, there are several attractions nearby, including the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, making it easy to spend the waiting time sightseeing before returning for your meal. Once seated, the service was efficient despite the busy restaurant. The food certainly lived up to the reputation. The signature xiaolongbao were freshly made with delicate, paper-thin wrappers and a rich, flavorful soup filling, while the other dishes were equally well prepared and delicious. Having visited Din Tai Fung branches in several countries, I genuinely felt that the quality at the original Taipei location was even better. The xiaolongbao seemed more delicate, the fillings tasted fresher, and every dish was cooked to perfection. Perhaps it was the anticipation after such a long wait, but the overall dining experience felt superior to other Din Tai Fung restaurants I’ve visited around the world. Overall, if you’re a fan of Din Tai Fung, this original location is worth visiting at least once for the experience and to try the food at its birthplace. However, whether it is worth waiting several hours is ultimately up to you. If you don’t mind the long queue, you’ll likely enjoy an excellent meal.
Din Tai Fung is an absolute must-visit in Taiwan! We visited the Xinsheng branch, and it was hands down the best dining experience of our trip. We were deeply moved by the staff's attentive and friendly service, and every dish was incredibly delicious and suited our Korean palates perfectly. Thanks to Din Tai Fung, we fell in love with Taiwan even more. If we visit Taiwan again, we will definitely return here multiple times. The Pork Chop Fried Rice, Xiao Long Bao, Cucumber Salad, Gloria Vegetable (Water Spinach), and Spicy Wontons were all amazing. Highly recommended! We will absolutely be back. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
We arrived at 11am (when it was opening) and there were already tons of people seated inside, so I'd go early. We waited maybe 10 minutes at most for our seats - cover for 3. Food was delicious overall. Having had DTF in Malaysia, Singapore and Australia, I'd say that the xiaolongbao are the best I've had amongst DTF branches (my XLB fave is Dragon-i in Penang), with the most flavour of them all. I've always thought their XLBs lacked some flavour (though skin delicacy always incredible) so was very pleased with these. Fried rice, soup noodles with pork chop, and beef noodle soup were all good. DTF loves a clean taste so don't expect super punchy flavours. These were great as I was flying that night so didn't want heavy food. The only slightly disappointing dish was the garlic spinach which was underseasoned. The restaurant was very clean, toilets consistently maintained as well well. Just be aware that DTF is pricey by Taiwanese standards (though it was markedly cheaper than Aus). Overall, I'm glad I made the effort to have DTF in its homeland!
If you dine in at this branch, there is an additional 10% service charge compared to take away. The waiting time for a table was quoted at around 30 minutes. Overall, the food was good — actually better than the 101 branch in my opinion. The service was also friendly and attentive, which made the experience more enjoyable.
