We were looking forwards to eating here and left full. We had a huge prawn, which was half the cost of the meal, but we thought it was worth the experience of buying it. Unfortunately it was overcooked, and as a result tough and dry. We did have it grilled and it did look cool. The waiter actually made sure that we really wanted to order it. We had the duck leg curry, a fluffy fish, and greens. The duck leg was good, but not exceptional like we had hoped as this was why we came. We thought walking the 3.5 km was surely going to make us more hungry and really appreciate it. The fluffy fish is a cat fish in a fluffy batter on a pumpkin curry sauce. If you've ever had the deep fried taro root dumplings at Chinese dim sum, this is the same type of coating. It didn't pair well at all with the duck leg curry, but was ok on its own. I think that it was probably an acquired taste. The greens were very tasty. Tried one of the local dark beers and it was similar to many good dark beers. The person next to us ordered a 500 ml Singha which probably would have been a better choice for the night. The seating looked out over the river towards a lit Wat which was cool. They had lights in the trees around the seating areas and live singer and guitar music which was nice as well. Good atmosphere.
Food was amazing but the social mission behind the restaurant made Paak Dang even more special. Had the honour to speak to the owner, K-Lin, who shared the inspiring story behind Paak Dang and how this restaurant stays true to its mission "changing lives". Every dishes we ordered were delicious. The atmosphere of the place was cosy and comfortable. Definitely recommend everyone to visit this restaurant when you are in Chiang Mai!
Lovely venue by the riverside. Quiet environment, doesn't seem to have other restaurants or bars around. Service is good, and food is very tasty. The fact that they give at-risk and underprivileged local youths training and exposure is commendable and for that reason (including the fact that food and environment is great) I will definitely return and recommend visitors to come as well. Keep up the good work and I hope the staff will not be shy to interact more with foreign guests!
Opened by a fellow Singaporean who has been here for more than a decade. The food is authentic Thai to the best of my knowledge. Sincere food with a social purpose to help the underprivileged kids. Come support this good cause!
This is long overdue, but I’m finally getting the time to write a well-deserved review. I had the pleasure of dining at Paak Dang twice ; once for a dear friend’s birthday, and again with my mom during Loy Krathong. Both visits were nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we arrived, the warmth and attentiveness of the entire team, from the gracious owner K-Lin to every staff member I had the pleasure of interacting with , they made us feel genuinely welcomed. It wasn’t just good service; it was heartfelt hospitality. In all my travels across Southeast Asia, I can honestly say this might be the best service I’ve experienced. The food was delicious, the riverside setting beautiful, but it’s the people who make Paak Dang truly special. It’s easily one of my favorite restaurants in Chiang Mai. I’ll absolutely be back — and I’ve already started recommending it to everyone I know. Tip: I would not miss out on the softshell crab. But literally everything I ordered was absolutely delicious!
